Jurgen Klopp hails Liverpool defender Joel Matip as ‘incredible’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has lauded centre-back Joel Matip for his contributions since joining the club in 2016.

The star has been in fine form so far this season, continuing on from where he left off in 2018/19.

Last term, Matip deputised for the injured Joe Gomez and was a revelation for the Reds as they ran Manchester City to within a point of the league title and won the Champions League.

Before 2018/19 Matip was generally used as a deputy for Gomez and Dejan Lovren, but now he is a regular in the side alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking about of the 28-year-old in a press conference, Klopp said (): “In a world of big transfer fees, signing Joel on free transfer was incredible, one of the best pieces of business we did.

“With the challenges you have, you grow. Joel was always an incredible talent. He was 18 playing for Schalke, that’s not easy.”

Matip has certainly come good for Liverpool and was massive for the team as they surged to European glory last term.

The Cameroonian looks a totally different player these days alongside van Dijk, and Gomez really does have his work cut out if he is going to dislodge him from the Reds’ backline.

There is absolutely no reason for the £100,000-a-week star () to be dropped at the moment and fans are embracing every minute of the the 6ft 5in star’s class.
