Jurgen Klopp credits Liverpool defender Nat Phillips despite Everton loss

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to give credit to Nat Phillips for his performance on Saturday despite the Merseyside defeat to Everton.

Liverpool suffered a 2-0 loss at Anfield over the weekend to bitter rivals Everton, who have moved level on points with them in the Premier League as a result.

Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson were on the scoresheet to give the visitors three points, while on the flip side the Reds have been left stunned by a shocking run of form.

The Reds have now lost four games on the spin in the league and their title defence has gone alarmingly wrong, as they now face a huge fight just to finish in the top four.

They ran into an in-form Everton goalkeeper in Jordan Pickford at Anfield, but still lacked a spark and were caught out defensively.

Klopp felt though that centre-back Phillips was impressive in the match.

The 23-year-old defender was substituted onto the pitch after just half an hour to replace injured captain Jordan Henderson, as he partnered new signing Ozan Kabak in the heart of defence.

“We have options, of course, but how difficult it makes it… it makes it really difficult. But, for example, Nat was for sure not for one second our problem,”

“So, yes, it is a massive blow losing Hendo again. Massive. But Nat played a super game.”

There can be no fault put on Phillips for either of Everton’s goals, as he was off the pitch for the first and the second was a penalty awarded against Trent Alexander-Arnold.

If Henderson’s injury is serious, it’s yet another horrendous piece of bad luck for Liverpool.

Phillips has done a solid job as a back-up centre-half whenever called upon this season and it looks like he may get some more minutes, especially as Kabak has looked shaky.

Phillips missed one headed chance that went into the side netting, while defensively he looked reliable and made some strong clearances.
