Jurgen Klinsmann has advice for reportedly-incoming Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte
Antonio Conte is reportedly closing in on the Tottenham Hotspur job this summer, just weeks after leaving Serie A title winners Inter Milan. Speaking to ESPN on the arrival of Conte, ex-Tottenham attacker Jurgen Klinsmann has given the Italian gaffer some advice – play attacking football.
Conte, 51, is closing in on a move to Tottenham along with sporting director Fabio Paratici, . Daniel Levy has seemingly won the race to hire the ex-Chelsea gaffer – who made the surprise decision to leave Inter. He was a frontrunner for Madrid, but they chose Carlo Ancelotti.
Jose Mourinho was sacked back in March. His negative style of play proved frustrating for Spurs fans, who want more expansive football – the style they got under Mauricio Pochettino. Klinsmann, a Spurs hero, gave Conte some advice – urging him to please fans by playing attacking football.
“Tottenham was always famous for entertaining the fans”, Klinsmann . “They are [known] for having outstanding creative players that make a difference and really entertain the crowd, this is Tottenham. But the Spurs fans are sophisticated. They know what is going on on the pitch.
“So now after this negative chapter after with Mourinho, they want to see a manager that looks after the fans, looking after what the fans would like to see. This is entertainment. It is not always about winning the title, it is more than that. So, it is going to be really interesting how Conte acts on that.”
Will Conte come and play attacking football at Tottenham, like Klinsmann says?
If he is to do so, Tottenham need to rely heavily on the quality of their defence. That means improvements are needed. That means Levy needs to put his hand in his pocket and splash out on two excellent centre-backs. Otherwise, Tottenham can forget about playing in an expansive manner.
Conte needs to go out and solidify a woefully poor defence. That gives Spurs the basis to go forward, and both the midfield and attack the confidence that their defence can cope with counter attacks. Keeping Harry Kane is also a crucial ingredient to Conte’s success – or whoever replaces him.
