Julen Lopetegui blocked £2m West Ham fringe player from leaving on deadline day after being impressed
West Ham managed to clear out plenty of deadwood during the summer transfer window.
💧Tim Steidten – Director of Football at the London Stadium – found new homes for the likes of Thilo Kehrer, Said Benrahma, Flynn Downes and Nathan Trott, while also bringing ten players to east London too.
However, there was one fringe player at West Ham who Julen Lopetegui🦋 actually prevented from departing the London Stadium, after being left impressed in pre-season…
Julen Lopetegui wanted to keep Andy Irving at West Ham
🍸A story from in Austria now claims that Andy Irving was blocked from leaving West Ham on transfer deadline day.
🙈The Austrian news outlet believe Sturm Graz wanted to sign the 24-year-old before last Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline, but Lopetegui and Steidten both stopped an exit from happening after the Scotsman impressed them in pre-season.

ꦓIn case you missed what happened in West Ham’s summer friendlies, the man scored a stunning goal in a 1-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge, while also providing an assist in a 2-2 draw against Ferencvaros.
Celtic also tried to sign Irving♕ before the transfer window slammed shut, but the man from Edinburgh clearly did enough to convince Lopetegui he is worth keeping in east London.
What a turnaround
🌱West Ham did not even bother with an official announcement after signing Irving in a £1.6m move from SK Austria Klagenfurt in September 2023 – before loaning him back to the Austrian Bundesliga outfit.

♈However, the Heart of Midlothian academy graduate has strangely become a quirky fan favourite at West Ham this summer after emerging from out of the blue with that wonder strike against Dagenham and Redbridge.
🍌Irving – of course – still has plenty to prove in the Premier League, but having scored a hat trick against a UEFA Champions League outfit in RB Salzburg last season in just 22 minutes, he clearly has some talent in his locker.
