Sabitzer stayed put in the end, but in January, he’ll have 18 months left on his contract, so time is ticking for the Bundesliga side to cash in were he to turn down a new deal.

According to a report from November, the Austria international – who can play on the wing and centrally – is still on Mourinho’s wish list, and is valued at around €30million (£27million).

And Falk has now claimed that Sabitzer is also interested in Tottenham, while Leipzig have problems in increasing his salary, reported to be €6million per year, or around £106,000 per week.

Although Sabitzer has missed a couple of games this season due to injury, he is back to full fitness and captaining Leipzig, with three goals and three assists from 16 appearances.

To date, the 26-year-old has made 204 competitive appearances for the club, his 46-goal and 38-assist return marking him out as one of the most dangerous midfielders in Germany.

Sabitzer has also blossomed from a leadership perspective – in the words of former RB Leipzig sporting director and coach Ralf Rangnick, he has “become a leader.”

As quoted by earlier this year, he added: “The way he has developed his personality is remarkable.”

Sabitzer is a player of the highest calibre and would be a great addition to any top side thanks to his talent, credentials, versatility and leadership skills.
