Joseph Yobo gutted that Everton have sold Henry Onyekuru to AS Monaco
that he feels The Toffees are missing out by selling attacker Henry Onyekuru to AS Monaco, despite the Nigerian star failing to make a single appearance for Everton.
An 11-time Nigeria international, 22-year-old Onyekuru moved to Everton in the summer of 2017. But the attacker failed to obtain a work permit, preventing him from playing for the Toffees. It forced him to go out on loan.
Indeed, Onyekuru first moved to Anderlecht where he clocked up 28 appearances and scored 10 goals. A long-term injury cut short his stay in Belgium, forcing him to return to Finch Farm and undergo rehabilitation.
He then tried his luck in Turkey, where he seriously impressed – scoring 16 goals from out wide and laying on six assists. But with his work permit issues, Everton opted to sell Onyekuru to Monaco this week for £12.5million ().
“He is a fantastic talent and I would have loved to see his deal [with Everton] go through but work permit restricted him from playing in the Premier League,”
“For me as an Evertonian, I feel he is a good prospect and would have been a great talent for Everton. I wish him all the best and hope he performs well like he did in Turkey and ultimately bring his form back to the national team.”
TBR’s view – Should Everton have kept Onyekuru?
Had Everton kept the winger, he would have likely needed another loan and plenty more international caps before finally being able to obtain a work permit and pull on the blue of Everton.
The likelihood is that Everton got fed up with trying to get a work permit sorted for the winger, and when a club like Monaco are willing to pay his transfer fee – it seems as though Everton opted to sell without hesitation.
Should they have kept him? That can only be determined on whether he impresses in France – which is a much bigger step up to the Turkish and Belgian leagues.
