Jose Mourinho’s past Scott McTominay comments have aged terribly for Manchester United after winning the Serie A title with Napoli

After leaving Manchester United in the summer, Scott McTominay has now won Serie A with Napoli in his first season in Italy.

McTominay won the league’s MVP award and the former Man United midfielder has taken his career to new heights in Naples.

In the past whilst he was still at Old Trafford, the Scot was often linked with the likes of West Ham United whilst David Moyes was in charge of the Hammers.

But with the greatest respect to West Ham, McTominay must be seriously happy that he waited for interest from Napoli.

The 28-year-old has scored 12 goals in 34 league games for the Italian champions, including the first in the 2-0 title-clinching win against Cagliari.

Jose Mourinho said Scott McTominay had ‘special character’ at Man United

That being said, when speaking to back in 2018, former United boss Jose Mourinho perhaps already explained why his old side were wrong to let McTominay leave.

The Scotland international left under Erik ten Hag’s watch, well before Ruben Amorim took the vacant post at Old Trafford.

McTominay enjoyed some excellent moments under Ten Hag, particularly as a goalscoring substitute.

However, those contributions weren’t enough to win a regular spot in the starting eleven, hence why the midfielder ended up in Naples.

But speaking after a 3-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham in 2018, when things also weren’t too rosy at United, Mourinho said that McTominay had ‘special character’.

Mourinho said: “Scott McTominay is a kid with a special character, very humble, aggressive in a positive way, brave, he’s a special kid.

“He’s a special character, a special personality that a team in a negative moment needs. Do my other players have that mentality? Not all of them. Everybody is a different person.”

How many special characters do Man United have left?

By most accounts, almost every Man United player is up for sale this summer as the club look to rebuild under Amorim.

The former Sporting CP manager has only really recruited Patrick Dorgu since he came in, and it might not be a coincidence that he was among the only credible performers in Bilbao.

But in terms of who United definitely need to keep from their current squad, it’s arguably only the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo who stand out.

Leny Yoro is obviously an exceptional talent too, and there are other quality players in United’s dressing room aside from the three mentioned.

But it’s clear why United are determined to keep Fernandes this summer, a player who is fiercely competitive and capable of producing clutch moments, much like McTominay whilst he was at the club.
