Jose Mourinho to rival three clubs for Roma transfer of Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri
According to , Jose Mourinho is set to rival Lazio, Sevilla and Fenerbahce to sign Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri as part of his Roma rebuild.
The former Tottenham Hotspur head coach is currently laying the groundwork for his summer transfer plans, ahead of taking up the Stadio Olimpico helm.
Shaqiri is an option for several sides around Europe as Jurgen Klopp strives to push through a sale, with Liverpool opposed to sanctioning a loan deal.
Shaqiri has two years remaining on the £80,000-per-week () terms signed upon his arrival at Anfield in 2018, when Liverpool triggered a £13million () release clause in his contract at Stoke City.
The Swiss international has struggled for game time this season, starting just Premier League appearances and featuring only three times in Liverpool’s last 12 games.
His situation has stood out to Lazio, Roma and Sevilla ahead of the summer transfer window who could offer moves to Italy and Spain, while Fenerbahce have long admired the 29-year-old.
Shaqiri previously played in Italy during the second half of the 2014/15 season while on loan at Inter Milan from Bayern Munich and featured regularly across the Serie A, Europa League and Coppa Italia, for in which he scored three goals and assisted two.
TBR’s view:
Shaqiri is a player with great ability and vision but has struggled to force his way into Klopp’s plans this season, so it is only natural for Liverpool to explore the winger’s situation with a view to a permanent summer transfer.
Klopp clearly feels he can do without Shaqiri, who Reds assistant boss Pep Lijnders calls a ‘superb’ talent (), and the playmaker’s influence on the pitch has also been marginal with one goal and four assists in 22 outings across all competitions.
It remains to be seen how highly Liverpool value the diminutive 5 ft 6 maestro, though, but also which of his potential suitors are willing to meet those demands and if any step forward and advance their position from pure interest.
