Jose Mourinho raves about ‘very good’ Spurs player who everyone has high hopes for
Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has waxed lyrical about Steven Bergwijn following his impressive performance for Spurs last time out.
The Dutchman joined Tottenham in January last year from PSV Eindhoven for a £27million fee on a contract until the summer of 2025.
His debut, against Manchester City, couldn’t have gone any better as he opened the scoring for his new side with a stunning volley en route to a 2-0 win.
Bergwijn can be happy with his efforts in his first year at Tottenham, with plenty of minutes, some great performances and a manager who rates him very highly.
After missing out against Fulham due to injury, he returned against Sheffield United on Sunday.
Bergwijn played a part in Spurs’ first and third goals, the team looking much better with him in it.
“He absolutely adds more thrust to Tottenham’s attack and he lets Son and Kane do what they do,” Alasdair Gold said on his channel.
“I will back him to the hilt, the goals will come, Mourinho said that repeatedly and everyone in the club has high hopes for Bergwijn.”
And on Friday, Mourinho added to the plaudits sent the player’s way.
“His season has been a little up and down in terms of fitness, of small injuries, even illness a couple of weeks ago,” he told the Tottenham .
“Of course, he has the potential to do better, but I was really happy with his performance in the last game.
“Very consistent, very participative, involved in lots of attacking situations, the shot for the good save that led to the first goal, the assist for Tanguy’s goal – yes, he was very good.”

Bergwijn has done really well at Spurs over the past 12 months, showing his class on both wings, and given his age and potential, there’s still a lot more to come from the Netherlands international.
He has claimed five assists to date this season and, though he’s yet to score in 2020-21, improvement in front of goal will surely come with time, at which point he’ll surely cement his place in the Spurs XI.
