Jose Mourinho had high praise for £35m reported Tottenham Hotspur target Raul Jimenez in 2016
Tottenham Hotspur are interested in bringing Mexican striker Raul Jimenez to the club this summer.
, Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing the frontman to Tottenham to challenge or perhaps even replace Harry Kane in the starting XI.
That should not come as a surprise. Jimenez has been in fine form for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season, scoring 22 goals and providing 10 assists in 44 games.
But it would appear Tottenham’s Portuguese boss has been a fan of Jimenez for some time.
When Mourinho attended the 66th Annual FIFA Congress in Mexico City, the local press took the opportunity to discuss some of Mexico’s better players with him. One player he picked out was the El Tri striker, who at the time was playing his football at Mourinho’s former club Benfica.
Mourinho made it clear to that he was a fan of Jimenez, despite him not being an Estadio Da Luz regular at that point.
“Fantastic. Raul Jimenez is having a good season.
“He is not always in the starting eleven but if Benfica are close to becoming champions it is in part thanks to his goals which have meant important points.”
These comments came toward the end of Jimenez’s first term at Benfica. The previous season was his debut European campaign and he struggled to break into Atletico Madrid’s first-team.
A summer move to Benfica followed and Jimenez spent most of the season behind Jonas and Kostas Mitroglou in the starting XI. However, the Mexican scored 12 goals in 45 games and, as Mourinho stated, scored some crucial goals.
His winning strikes against Coimbra and Rio Ave helped the Eagles win the Primeira Liga title ahead of city rivals Sporting by just two points.
That level of crucial goal-scoring ability clearly caught the eye of Mourinho, who now looks set to try and lure him to North London.
Jimenez, however, will not come cheap. The 28-year-old himself that he expects to be worth over £35 million if a rival team comes calling and he also seems happy at high-flying Wolves.
But should Kane make his way to the Tottenham exit door this summer, then Mourinho might have the financial clout to swoop on a player he has admired since 2016.
