Jose Mourinho confirms Tottenham defender will be recalled in Europa League

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he will recall Toby Alderweireld to the side on Wednesday in the Europa League.

Spurs host Austrian side Wolfsberger on Wednesday evening in the second leg of the Europa League Round of 32 tie.

The North London club already have one foot in the last 16 after winning 4-1 in the first leg, but they will need to finish the job tomorrow.

Spurs have been fairly comfortable in the European competition so far this season, but domestically they’ve lost five of their previous six Premier League games and are searching for some kind of form.

Mourinho has revealed that defender Alderweireld will be back in the starting XI on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old centre-back started the first leg against Wolfsberger, but has been left on the bench in the two previous league fixtures.

“Toby didn’t play against West Ham but tomorrow he will play, that’s obvious,” Mourinho said, as quoted by

TBR’s View:

Alderweireld, who earns £150,000-a-week (), is one of the most experienced individuals in the Spurs squad and has proven himself as a top-class defender over the years.

But the Belgium international is no longer a nailed-on starter in the team and watched from the bench the weekend’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

Mourinho has a lot of competition in the heart of defence this season and right now Alderweireld can’t cement his spot in the side, as he battles alongside teammates such as Eric Dier, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez.
