Jose Mourinho comments on Gedson Fernandes’ future

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he has no idea over the future of Gedson Fernandes but admits that he would be happy if the Portuguese youngster stuck around at Spurs.

Tottenham signed Fernandes from Benfica on an 18-month loan deal last January, with a potential £40 million permanent deal arranged for this summer.

However, Fernandes has struggled to maintain a regular first-team space in the Tottenham team and there are numerous reports that Fernandes will be allowed to leave Spurs this winter.

The latest rumours are suggesting that Torino are keen on signing Fernandes for the rest of the season.

But Jose Mourinho, talking to the press this week, has confirmed he knows very little about Fernandes’ future.

“We don’t speak with other clubs, because the player is not ours, we speak with Benfica,” Mourinho “If he stays, great, he is another option for us, and every time he plays he does well for us so it would never be a problem to have him.

“We never feel the right to keep a player who is not our player and is not playing as much as they would like. If there is anything between us and Benfica, yes, Benfica knows that we are open to collaborate with a friendly club like they are but if there is any other club involved I cannot confirm because honestly, I don’t know.”

What is clear is that Tottenham are ready to allow Fernandes’ loan deal to be cancelled in order for him to go and play elsewhere with regular first-team football on the table.

Fernandes has struggled to make his mark at Tottenham and this precocious talent clearly needs to get some regular time on the pitch going forward.

If not, Mourinho will no doubt relish having a player of his quality as back-up. However, the subject of his future is firmly in Benfica’s hands.
