Jordon Mutch’s early Crystal Palace departure reveals a 2015 transfer error

Jordon Mutch’s Crystal Palace contract was terminated last week — six months before it was set to expire.

The early departure of the winger reveals Palace’s 2015 transfer error, when the Eagles purchased Mutch from Queens Park Rangers for .

Alan Pardew signed the then 23-year-old attacker with high hopes after Mutch had impressed for Cardiff City, but the Englishman flopped during his spell at Selhurst Park.

In four years at Crystal Palace, Mutch made just 40 first team appearances. And his attacking production was simply abysmal for a winger, as Mutch did not score or assist a single goal during the entirety of his time in SE25.

Most recently, Mutch spent a loan spell at Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer, but even the greatly reduced competition level of MLS couldn’t bring success out of the winger.

The Palace loanee registered two goals and three assists in Canada in 18 matches, yet the Whitecaps failed to extend his loan beyond this season.

Back in London, Crystal Palace saw no need to retain Mutch’s services and cut his contract short — a clear admission that the club made a grave error when splashing almost £5 million on the goal-shy winger four years ago.
