Jonathan Woodgate names Spurs youngster to ‘look out for’

Jonathan Woodgate that he believes that Eric Dier and Cristian Romero will make up Tottenham’s first choice centre-back pairing for now, but insisted that fans need to look out for Japhet Tanganga in the years to come.

What’s the story?

Tottenham are looking to bounce back from back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the Premier League. And they have been boosted by having fewer problems amongst their defensive options.

Romero and Davinson Sanchez have now been back available for some time. And Tanganga is available after suspension.

Woodgate hinted that he expects Dier and Romero to start against the Gunners. But he went on to express his excitement about the 22-year-old’s future.

“I look closely at centre-halves. At Spurs, I like Japhet Tanganga. I think Nuno will try to forge a partnership between Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, but longer-term look out for Tanganga, who is aggressive, strong and quick,” .

“Spurs have the option to go three at the back. It does not have to be a negative formation: look at the way Chelsea do it. But you do need wing-backs who can bomb on and outside centre-backs who are quick.”

Tanganga must be contender to start at right-back for Tottenham against Arsenal

Tanganga had made an impressive start to the campaign before his red card. Even against Crystal Palace, he was arguably Spurs’ best defender before being dismissed.

He was colossal against Manchester City on the opening day.

And with that, Nuno faces a key decision before the derby.

Emerson Royal has had a mixed time since arriving from Barcelona. He has certainly shown glimpses of his quality. However, he looks to need some time to settle into his new surroundings.

So perhaps Tanganga should get the chance to start at right-back on Sunday.

He has produced Spurs’ best displays at right-back so far this term. And he will need no reminding of what the game means either.
