Joleon Lescott shares what Neil Lennon has been telling him about 23-year-old Celtic player

There were many standouts in Celtic’s win over Feyenoord last night in the Champions League.

Young Mitchel Frame came on as a second-half substitute and really impressed. Luis Palma did well to hold his nerve and tuck away the penalty in the first half.

And Gustaf Lagerbielke was excellent for the short time he was on the pitch. But one other player caught the eye of Joleon Lescott last night and it was neither of the two goalscorers.

The former England international was waxing lyrical about Matt O’Riley after watching his assist for Celtic’s winger and shared what former Hoops gaffer, Neil Lennon, has been saying about him.

Lescott said [], “It’s a simple finish but that’s what he has to do. O’Riley here, I’m screaming at TV to get the ball back because he is free inside the box.

“But then they show great patience and look at his touch. To assess the flight so late, to take the touch and then to pick someone out of the back stick.

“Listen, he will get all the credit [Lagerbielke] for scoring, but O’Reilly here, Neil has been telling me all season that he has been outstanding.”

And that he has been, Joleon. O’Riley has been superb for Celtic not on domestically but also in the Champions League this season.

Last night marked his third assist in the competition as the 23-year-old shows that, once again, he can mix it with Europe’s big boys.

There is little doubt that on the evidence of his performances this season, Celtic could be courting bids for O’Riley either in January or next summer.

The Danish international has just signed a contract extension so it would take a massive offer to even have Celtic consider selling him.

He is one of Rodgers’ best players so he will be in no mood to lose O’Riley especially as he continually reinforces the need to add quality to the Celtic team.

However, the Celtic fans will need to enjoy him while they can because if O’Riley continues to shine in the spotlight, clubs will be queueing up to sign him.
