John Terry made prediction about Newcastle United-linked man last summer, got it spot on

Reported Newcastle United target John McGinn was tipped by John Terry to take the Premier League by storm last season – a prediction the Aston Villa assistant manager got spot on.

According to , the Magpies are monitoring the Villa midfielder with a view to a summer move, while the claims he’s one of Steve Bruce’s main transfer targets this summer.

McGinn has been sensational for club and country this season, building on his impressive work from last term – his maiden season after a £ move from Hibernian – when he helped the Villa Park side get promoted from the Championship.

The 25-year-old – who claimed from 18 Premier League games – was one of the most talked-about players in the top flight before his season was disrupted by a long-term ankle injury, a blow for both the player and his club, who were left battling relegation prior to the league’s suspension.

When a team reaches the Premier League, there are always some doubts as to whether the players who shone in the Championship will do just as well at the highest level, but the Chelsea legend had no qualms about how McGinn would fare.

“What a player he is,” Terry told in July last year. “He is a great lad. He gets that backside into people and rolls people! He is an absolute pleasure to work with. To work with him on a daily basis is great.

“He is an absolute gentleman, a real talent and I think he is going to take the Premier League by storm this year because people aren’t going to know what to expect. He is a real top talent, a great lad who is keen to get better and improve himself. Celtic have missed one there, for sure.”

Along with Jack Grealish, McGinn has been a cut above for Villa this season, and his downturn in form and injury-enforced absence haven’t been good for the West Midlanders in the slightest.

Should Villa suffer relegation from the Premier League, the midfield maestro is very unlikely to drop back down to the second tier with his club, who in turn would make quite a bit of money from selling him.

Last summer, the Scotland international was reported by The Sun to be a £50million target for Manchester United, and though it’s unlikely Villa will be in such a strong negotiating position if they return to the Championship, a bidding war could nonetheless see him leave for a big sum.
