John McGinn discusses Celtic links to currently-employed manager

John McGinn has told the that he is not surprised Scotland manager Steve Clarke is being linked with the vacant Celtic job, but is keen to see the current national team boss stay in the Scotland dugout.

Clarke has been linked with a move to Celtic as the 57-year-old continues to shine in the Scotland hotseat. Having starred during his time as Kilmarnock manager, Clarke has now taken Scotland to their first major tournament in 22 years.

The former West Brom manager is not the only name. The likes of Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard, Roy Keane and plenty more are reported candidates for the Celtic job – while Michael O’Neill has been touted by the likes of Chris Sutton.

McGinn, who came close to joining Celtic before moving to Aston Villa in 2018 (), commented on whether Clarke should take the Parkhead job – and stated that while there he has no surprises to the link, he expects Clarke to remain as Scotland boss.

“First and foremost, I’m not surprised he’s been connected and linked with the job,” £30million-rated () . “He’s a brilliant manager and says it how it is. He’s obviously been with the top clubs across England and up here.

“He did a brilliant job with Kilmarnock and as a team it was probably slow initially as to how we had set up under him, but the more and more we got used to how it worked and the style of play it certainly has benefitted us going forward.

“The success is really a platform and he is as hungry as us players to go and carry that on, so it’s nice to hear that there is going to be a bit of continuity (for the Euros) if someone is going to nab him but hopefully the SFA can keep him for a while yet.”

TBR’s view – Clarke would be a stunning appointment

But the chances of Clarke moving to either Old Firm side look unlikely. The ex-Chelsea assistant has stated that he does not want to move to the volatile tornado of an Old Firm club – having seen how the likes of Neil Lennon have been treated, a club legend.

That aside, Clarke is ideal for Celtic and who knows whether he could be tempted by the role – after the European Championships. Right now, Clarke will be focused on the tournament – and Celtic probably need a manager sooner.
