John Hartson thinks Rangers may have to ‘rethink’ Todd Cantwell transfer stance at last minute

It has been a busy summer for Rangers so far as Philippe Clement attempts to overhaul his squad.

Eight new signings have walked through the door at Ibrox and even more have departed with a host of players allowed to leave at the end of their contracts.

A 6-0 win over Ross County on Saturday lifted the spirits of the Glasgow giants after they fell short in their Champions League qualification push.

But attention at Rangers has quickly turned back to the transfer window with business still to be done before the window slams shut on Friday evening.

Rangers have made contact to sign Josip Brekalo as they look to bring in a new attacker before the deadline.

They are equally busy trying to offload Todd Cantwell after the English midfielder handed in a bombshell transfer request during pre-season.

Rangers may have to ‘rethink’ Todd Cantwell stance

Despite Cantwell pushing to leave Ibrox, he remains at Rangers with just two days until the window closes.

He has attracted interest from the Championship with John Eustace admitting that Blackburn Rovers have discussed a move for the 26-year-old.

However, Rangers are yet to receive a suitable offer for him and John Hartson believes they will now have to consider changing their transfer stance.

Speaking on the , Hartson said: “A player like Cantwell, you thought when he was playing regularly last season his fee would be at a decent amount if somebody came in for him.

“Now we are edging towards the end of the window, they might have to rethink and think ‘we have to get his wages off the books’.

“Also, they might just have to accept a lower fee as well. Other clubs are looking at that situation and it puts Rangers in a bit of a sticky situation.”

Rangers have a crucial decision to make

Cantwell, who was described as “” by Rangers legend Brian Laudrup, has made it blindingly clear that he does not want to stay at Rangers.

The club is now running the risk of having an unhappy star in the dressing room if they are unable to strike a deal.

But at the same time, Cantwell is a valuable asset to Rangers and losing him for a cut-price fee would be a real shame.

It is a crucial decision to make, and there isn’t much time to make it.
