John Dempster raves about Leeds loanee Conor Shaughnessy’s debut

Mansfield Town boss John Dempster has lauded Conor Shaughnessy after the Leeds United loanee made his debut for the League Two side at the weekend, .

Shaughnessy joined the Stags on loan on the final day of the summer transfer window after struggling to force his way into Marcelo Bielsa’s plans at Elland Road.

And he got the chance to make his debut for the club last week as Dempster’s men hosted Scunthorpe United. The game ended in a 2-0 win, and Shaughnessy was named man of the match.

And after the game, Dempster expressed his delight with the 23-year-old’s performance, insisting that he was a class above.

“I was chuffed with Conor’s debut and I thought he was outstanding,” he said, .

“He does bring flexibility. He can sit in front of the back three or four and can play at centre half as well. He is good on the ball but he is also a physical presence.

“We have had a look at him in a number of positions in training and he’s looked comfortable in all of them.”

It is going to be a tough task for Shaughnessy to really catch Bielsa’s eye while he is away from Leeds. The Whites are enjoying plenty of success right now.

The former Reading man is playing in the fourth tier, so will need to make a serious impact to prove any sort of point to his parent club. He struggled during a spell with Hearts last term, and ultimately fell out of favour before the campaign concluded.

However, he has made a fantastic start to life with Mansfield Town. And after struggling, he may well be even more determined to make the most of the opportunity he has now got to play regularly.
