John Aldridge raves about Rangers win over Braga in Europa League clash

Rangers ensured it was a famous European night at Ibrox last night, coming from 2-0 down to beat Braga 3-2. Ianis Hagi (2) and Joe Aribo coming up with the good to give the Gers a one-goal advantage ahead of next week’s second leg.

Fransergio and Abel Ruiz had put the in-form visitors in the ascendency but Steven Gerrard’s men roared back with aplomb.

With just 23 minutes to play of the first leg and with some supporters choosing to leave the stadium, a breathtaking spell of attacking football saw the Light Blues prevail.

Braga hadn’t lost for 10 games prior to last night’s trip to Ibrox. For large parts they looked quality, playing some neat football with Rangers having little in the way of a response.

Gerrard’s men found something, however, and the boss will hope his charges can use the memorable night as the catalyst to revive their domestic campaign which has hit the bricks in recent weeks.

One man who clearly thought Gerrard had a big influence on last night’s comeback was ex-Liverpool star, John Aldridge.

He took to Twitter shortly after the full-time whistle, stating that he thinks the Rangers boss has taken some of the Anfield European mentality to Ibrox with him.

Aldridge also took time out to praise Celtic for their 1-1 draw at FC Copenhagen, where the Hoops needed a Fraser Forster penalty save to avoid going into the second leg behind.

The 61-year-old scored 50 goals for the Reds in 83 appearances before moving to La Liga to sign for Real Sociedad.

Aldridge never tasted success in Europe with Liverpool but he did win the First Division title and the FA Cup during his time at Anfield.

Big-game mentality

Gerrard will remember fondly some of the great European comebacks during his time as a player and it’s no bad thing that he is instilling a similar attitude into his players as a manager.

Rangers will hope to get the job done next week but first, they must look towards the weekend’s game with St Johnstone.

The Gers are already 10 points behind rivals Celtic and they can ill-afford to fall any further behind their Old Firm rivals.
