John Aldridge claims Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino still has to score goals

John Aldridge believes that Liverpool’s Roberto Fimrino needs to score more goals and is expecting him to discover some form in front of goal after notching at the weekend.

The Brazilian striker netted an 85th minute winner at Selhurst Park in the 2-1 victory away to Crystal Palace.

It means the Reds are flying at the top of the Premier League table with 37 points from only 13 games and are frontrunners in the title race as it stands.

Firmino plays the central role in Liverpool’s famous attacking trio, with the explosive duo of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah flanking him on the wings.

His strike against Palace was only his fourth goal of the season in 19 games across all competitions.

But on top of that it’s important to recognise he’s chipped in with eight assists too and many people would argue he’s the glue that holds the team together.

Ex-Reds attacker Aldridge has delivered a somewhat odd criticism of Firmino, but is now backing him to find his goalscoring touch.

“It was great to see Roberto Firmino end a run of seven league games without a goal. He has a lot of aspects to his game and he’s not a ‘goalscoring striker’ but being a centre forward he has to score goals,”

“I know what it’s like as a striker when you lose your confidence in front of goal and you need a bit of luck to get it back. I think after Saturday that will have done him the world of good and we will start to see more goals from Bobby in the coming weeks.”

TBR’s View:

Firmino may not be able to keep pace with Europe’s leading goalscorer, but there aren’t any centre-forwards that could be as effective as him for Liverpool.

He plays such a vital role in Jurgen Klopp’s system with his tireless work-rate and his intelligent build up play around the box.

The 28-year-old should certainly not look to change his own game and his unselfishness at times is what makes him such an elite talent.
