Joel Robles faces uncertain future after Everton nightmare
Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles has endured a dreadful 2017/18 season at Goodison Park, confined to all year.
Robles must now seek an exit from Everton in order to salvage his career, just one season after making 20 Premier League appearances for the Toffees.
Signed in the summer of 2013 from Wigan, Robles followed Roberto Martinez from the DW Stadium to Goodison Park, yet made just nine league appearances in his first two seasons combined.
His big break came in early 2016, when Martinez ahead of the aging United States international Tim Howard.
The Spanish goalkeeper then enjoyed his best season to date in 2016/17, leading the Toffees to seventh position while playing 20 times in the league.
Yet the signing of Jordan Pickford in 2017 relegated the Spaniard to third choice, behind both the young Englishman and Maarten Stekelenburg.
The harsh reality of being demoted to a final resort will have surely harmed the 27-year-old’s confidence. Now, Robles must seek a move away from Merseyside and back to his native Spain if he wants to save his footballing career.
Although Everton manager Sam Allardyce has publicly expressed at Everton, the goalkeeper’s contract expires in June and must ignore his manager’s pleas.
A transfer to Rayo Vallecano, where Robles made 13 appearances for on loan in 2013 before joining Wigan, would provide a possible destination for the exiled Evertonian.
The Spanish side currently sit first in the Segunda División, and look set to achieve promotion to La Liga.
They will certainly be looking for top-flight experience in goal, and Robles would prove the perfect man to lead them to La Liga stability – while saving his career in the process.
