Joel Matip could now help Liverpool sign ‘dominant’ defender this summer after recent developments

Liverpool’s summer transfer window is still waiting to be kicked into life following the appointment of Arne Slot.

The Reds have now taken off on their pre-season tour of the United States but will not have any new faces to show their fans across the pond.

Arne Slot‘s new dawn at Anfield will provide a lot of uncertainties as to what is to come over the next few months and that remains true with no action in the window.

Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool future now hangs in the balance with the Dutchman receiving interest from Saudi Arabia.

However, the Reds could already be eyeing up his replacement and could enlist the help of one of their former players in getting a deal across the line.

Joel Matip could help Liverpool sign defensive target

Joel Matip left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 campaign as his contract on Merseyside came to an end.

Currently, Matip remains without a club, however, that could soon change with interest surrounding the Cameroon international’s signature.

Talks are now ongoing between Matip and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen as the free agent looks for his next club.

And this is something which could really help the Reds over the coming weeks as they eye their own defensive reinforcement.

Liverpool are interested in Leverkusen’s centre-back Jonathan Tah who could be on the move this summer.

The German defender is a player who has attracted a lot of interest already this summer with Manchester United also strong linked.

However, if Matip was to make the move to Leverkusen, that could potentially loosen the Bundesliga champion’s grasp on Tah this summer.

Seeing Matip sign for Xabi Alonso’s side could provide Liverpool with a pathway to make their move for the ‘dominant‘ Tah.

With an experienced defender potentially landing in Leverkusen, they could well be more willing to discuss a possible exit for their 28-year-old who only has one-year left on his contract.

Liverpool at risk of losing more defenders

This summer could see some real turnover at the back for the Reds with Matip already leaving at the end of last season.

Van Dijk is not the only current Liverpool defender who could also be set to follow Matip for the exit doors at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also receiving interest from Real Madrid with just one-year also remaining on his deal with the Reds.

After losing Jurgen Klopp recently, Liverpool fans will be crossing their fingers come of their biggest names do not follow suit.

But they could land a big addition this summer in Tah with the defender having played an important role in Leverkusen’s stunning 2023/24 campaign.
