Joe Gomez makes admission about Arne Slot after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Man City

Joe Gomez had the enviable task of replacing Ibrahima Konate for Liverpool’s crucial tie with Manchester City at Anfield.

Fortunately, Gomez was brilliant and Liverpool romped to a 2-0 win over their old rivals – a truly dominant performance.

It almost feels as if the rest of the world is waiting for Arne Slot’s project to fall down – the pace of Liverpool’s winning so soon after Jurgen Klopp’s departure is defying all expectations.

Arsenal struggled to replace Arsene Wenger, Manchester United did similar with Sir Alex Ferugson, and yet Liverpool are flying in the post-Klopp era, it’s an extraordinary start.

Joe Gomez says Arne Slot isn’t trying to be like Jurgen Klopp

That being said, when speaking to after the game, Gomez spoke about life under Slot and referenced the transition from Klopp.

The defender, who made his first Premier League start of the season in the win over City, claimed that Slot wasn’t trying to be Klopp, he was simply being himself.

Gomez said: “I think the biggest thing is he’s not trying to fill Jurgen’s shoes or be Jurgen.

“Jurgen’s legacy is stamped in the history of the club and that cannot be changed.

“He [Slot] has been himself, it has been refreshing and all the coaching staff have been positive.

“Today was about hard work and working harder than them. The work is not done and we have not won anything – it is a great start and he’s constantly reminding us about going again.

“He knows we have experience in the squad and he is just on us.”

Cody Gakpo was right about Joe Gomez

Harping back to Gomez’s performance in Sunday’s win, the England international was almost flawless alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Gomez was spraying passes to Cody Gakpo out on the left-wing, demonstrating Liverpool’s strength in depth.

Gakpo complimented Gomez recently, a player he’s clearly happy to be playing alongside.

And on that note, Van Dijk claimed that Gomez was his best friend at Liverpool, a partnership that has been clear to see over the years.

An excellent win for Liverpool, and it would take something special to stop Slot’s side from achieving big this season.
