Joe Gelhardt shows why Everton and Liverpool are keen with excellent first senior goal

It appears there could be a Merseyside battle on hand at the end of the season for the services of Joe Gelhardt.

earlier this month, both Liverpool and Everton are keen on signing the talented Wigan Athletic forward.

who suggested both clubs were tracking him whilst also throwing Chelsea’s name into the hat.

Gelhardt, a boyhood Liverpool fan, would prove an impressive young transfer signing for either the Reds or Everton and yesterday he went some way towards showing why.

Yesterday saw the England under-17 international score his first senior goal for Wigan.

The teenager came on in the 72nd minute with Wigan 2-1 down against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium. Just three minutes later, he had scored the equaliser.

It was a fantastic goal. With little space and his back to goal Gelhardt’s neat first touch allowed him the chance to rocket a left-foot strike beyond George Long in the Hull goalmouth.

Dare say it, but it was a goal a young Wayne Rooney would have been proud of.

Everton and Liverpool look set to go head-to-head in a battle to sign the striker in the months to come. Based on this display, Wigan will be fighting hard to keep him away from Merseyside.
