Jesse Marsch says injured Leeds player is just weeks away from return

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has confirmed that Leo Hjelde underwent surgery last week.

The new Elland Road boss also revealed that he expects the 18-year-old to be back in weeks.

Hjelde suffered a knee injury in the defeat to Everton in February and has been on the sidelines since.

There were fears that the defender could’ve missed the rest of the season due to the injury.

However, Marsch has told reporters that Hjelde will be out for weeks instead of months.

“He had surgery last Wednesday,” quotes the Whites boss as saying. “Seven or eight days ago.

“Immediate feedback is that it was not so severe. His knee hasn’t reacted, he has full range of motion.

“Recovery looking like a matter of weeks rather than months.”

Hjelde has played three times for Leeds United’s senior side since joining from Celtic in the summer.

He has done incredibly well in all of those appearances and looks like a player with real potential.

Hjelde is also versatile, able to play as both a left-sided centre-back and a left-back.

Marcelo Bielsa rated the Norwegian highly and named him in numerous matchday squads.

Chances are Hjelde will also impress Marsch once he’s back in training.

Leeds have 11 games left to play in the Premier League this season, so the pressure is on.

Hopefully Hjelde will be able to play a part in some of those.

“What a player he’s looking”

Elland Road icon Jermaine Beckford lauded Hjelde on the official after he shone in January’s 3-2 win over West Ham United.

“The young boy, Hjelde when he came on as well, what a player he’s looking by the way,” he said.

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him.

“But that’s twice we’ve seen him, twice we’ve seen him against West Ham, against a very physical, very strong, very quick centre forward in Michail Antonio and a tricky player in Jarrod Bowen.

“I don’t want to say he had them in his pocket, but I think he did.”
