Jermaine Beckford reacts as Charlie Cresswell signs new Leeds contract

Jermaine Beckford joined a host of current Leeds United players in expressing his delight for Charlie Cresswell that the defender has signed a new contract at Elland Road.

Cresswell is one of the most exciting prospects on the books at Thorp Arch. He has made one appearance for Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team. And he is the captain of the under-23 side.

The centre-back has now committed his future to the club. Leeds announced on Wednesday that he is set to stay until 2025.

It looks to be a real boost for the Premier League side. The 19-year-old appears to have a scary amount of potential.

Cresswell should set sights on first-team role after signing new Leeds contract

Admittedly, it does not appear to be the easiest time to be a young centre-back at Leeds.

Bielsa has four extremely good options available to him in Diego Llorente, Pascal Struijk, Robin Koch and Liam Cooper.

Cooper is the oldest and turns 30 later this month. So the quartet could stick together for some time yet.

Having said that, Cresswell looks to be a special talent. And he can surely take encouragement from the journey Struijk took last year.

One performance changed almost everything for the youngster. His remarkable showing out of position against Barnsley showed he could definitely step up.

Within a few months, injuries meant that he was starting at centre-back against Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Leeds will hope they enjoy more luck with injuries to their defenders this season.

But if fitness is a problem once again, Cresswell will be ready.
