Jermaine Beckford explains where Leeds winger Ian Poveda needs to improve

that Ian Poveda needs to improve his attitude when it comes to defending – but predicts the pocket-sized attacker will become a “brilliant player” over the next few seasons.

Poveda, 20, joined Leeds in January 2020 from Manchester City and has since been used sparingly by Marcelo Bielsa. The young attacker has found Jack Harrison, Helder Costa and now Raphinha in his way.

This season, Poveda has made seven appearances – but six have come as a substitute in the Premier League while his only start came in the Carabao Cup defeat to Hull City. Certainly, he has not shown why he deserves to start, yet.

Leeds icon Beckford commented on Poveda, stating the England youth international needs to improve his attitude when it comes to defending, and that he needs to get stronger. But he does predict Poveda to have success.

“He’s got pace, trickery,” . “The only issue with Poveda is his attitude to tracking back and defending. I think once he has nailed that, and realises it is team game and doing it for the greater good – he will be a brilliant player. Especially over the next two, three four years. He needs to get a bit stronger.”

TBR’s view – Does Poveda have what it takes to break into side?

Raphinha’s goal against Everton will not only have secured his place in the starting XI, but it has also pushed Costa and Poveda further down the pecking order. It will be a tall order for Poveda to get into the senior side.

Still only 20 years of age, the tricky winger needs to shine for the Under-23 side, impress when he gets a substitute appearance in the Premier League – and if a loan move occurs, perhaps take a chance on a Championship side.
