‘Jekyll and Hyde’: Pundit bemoans Arsenal inconsistency as league struggles continue
Tony Cascarino says he can’t work out whether Arsenal are a good or bad team.
Mikel Arteta’s side have lacked consistency this season, with some outstanding performances offset by a number of dire displays.
The former Celtic and Olympique Marseilles striker was talking after a 3-0 victory over Sheffield United was followed by an outstanding 4-0 away win in the Europa League against Slavia Prague.
As if to underline his point, Arteta’s men needed a goal deep into injury time to salvage a draw against Fulham at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
A penalty from Josh Maja after 59 minutes gave Fulham the lead, before Eddie Nketiah secured a point for the hosts.
The result leaves Arsenal ninth in the table, nine points off a Champions League place.
Speaking on , Cascarino said: “If you would say who takes the trophy of the Jekyll & Hyde team of the season, it’s Arsenal.
“They are the Jekyll & Hyde team. I can’t work out sometimes if they’re actually really good at times, or really bad.”
Asked by host Natalie Sawyer where the team that blew Slavia Prague away 4-0 on Thursday night has been, he replied: “I’ll give you another one. If you go back to the previous round, they won 3-1 at Olympiakos. 3-1, comfortable.
“Then lose at home 1-0. And it was like, that is the same team that won at Olympiakos 3-1.
“I couldn’t get my head around that that was the same personnel, or similar side.
“They were terrific away, and lost 1-0 at the Emirates, and that is what Arsenal are.
“I cannot work them out.”
Arsenal are next in action on Friday night when they welcome Everton to the Emirates, before taking on Villareal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday April 29.
