Javier Mascherano praises ‘evolution’ of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp

Former Liverpool hero Javier Mascherano has heaped praise on Jurgen Klopp and his current Anfield heroes.

The Argentine joined Liverpool after an ill-fated stint at West Ham United in 2007. He went on to become a star player for Liverpool over a three-and-a-half-year period before moving to Barcelona and becoming one of the best defensive-minded players in world football.

Speaking to the press in Argentina, , the current Estudiantes star made it clear that his Liverpool team were nowhere near the standard of the current Liverpool squad.

“The team that continues to surprise me with the evolution it has had is Liverpool. It is clear that Klopp has put it together in his image and likeness. I am ten years behind, I see how we played with that Liverpool and nothing to do with what I see today.

“I have been following Klopp since he coached Dortmund, which was a pressing team similar to what Liverpool does today but now he has added a positional play share, before it was much more direct. That evolution is what I like because, in the end, it ends up being a more complete team.”

He also praised the evolution of the Liverpool team at present under the guidance of Klopp, who he had plenty of praise for.

Liverpool during Mascherano’s era had some incredibly talented players. The likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, and Xabi Alonso for example. But Mascherano and his team-mates never won a trophy at Liverpool, finishing second in the 2008-09 Premier League season under Rafa Benitez.

Undoubtedly, Klopp has now taken Liverpool to another level, and fans will be delighted to hear that Mascherano, who went on to win 19 major honours at Barcelona, is still keeping tabs on his old club.
