Javier Mascherano delivers verdict on Leeds United win, praises one player
Javier Mascherano has applauded Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa for their excellent 5-0 win over Stoke City on Thursday evening at Elland Road – and picked out Pablo Hernandez for singluar praise.
Leeds returned to the top of the Championship table with all three points against Michael O’Neill’s beleaguered Stoke. It took Leeds until just before half-time to break the deadlock, though.
Tommy Smith gave away a penalty and Mateusz Klich converted. In the second half, Helder Costa made it two, before Liam Cooper scored a third. Hernandez supplied the finishing touch next, after more than 30 passes by Leeds.
Patrick Bamford rounded off the win with his fourth goal in six games and Barcelona and Liverpool icon Mascherano applauded Bielsa’s Leeds – praising Hernandez for his exquisite finish in the second 45.
The Tweet is translated as: “Leeds’ first goal gave reassurance to a team that, until then, played with the pressure of other results. The second half is being the kind of team that led them to be the top of the championship.”
El primer gol de Leeds le dió tranquilidad a un equipo que, hasta ese momento, jugaba con el peso de los resultados de la jornada.

His praise of Hernandez: “Great goal by Pablo Hernandez. Very important victory and it sends a message to your closest rivals.”

Leeds now sit on 81 points at the top of the Championship with just four league games to play. They take on in-form Swansea in Wales next, as they look to stretch their lead over West Brom – which remains by just a point.
Brentford, meanwhile, are breathing down the necks of both Leeds and West Brom and they take on Derby County on Saturday at 12:30pm, while Leeds must wait until Sunday to face Swansea at 13:30pm.
