Jason Cundy wowed by Liverpool transfer rumour he’s heard

Liverpool have stepped up their transfer activity ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Up until Tuesday, the Reds were the only Premier League team yet to have signed a single player this summer.

That is no longer the case, with Liverpool having landed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, though he’s set to remain in Spain on loan.

However, speculation has since begun doing the rounds on the Liverpool rumour mill regarding an exciting winger, and things seem to be heading in the right direction.

TalkSPORT presenter Jason Cundy has now described said transfer rumour as a “no-brainer” for Arne Slot’s side.

Jason Cundy says Federico Chiesa to Liverpool is a ‘no-brainer’

Over the past few days, Liverpool are said to have begun talks with Juventus over Federico Chiesa.

On Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano claimed that Chiesa is “super keen” on joining Liverpool, who in turn are “confident” of striking a deal.

Better still, the transfer fee is said to be in the region of €15million (£12.6million), which is not particularly high for a world-class attacker in his prime.

Cundy, speaking on talkSPORT (27/8/2024, 4:53pm), said: “He has got a year left on his contract. It feels a no-brainer. 26 years of age. £10-£15 million. Someone like him.”

Why Chiesa to Liverpool is a great idea despite Reds already being well-stocked in attack

It can be argued that Liverpool aren’t prioritising the right positions this summer.

For instance, Mamardashvili is a great player, but he’s not set to arrive at Anfield until next year, and Liverpool don’t really need any new goalkeepers now.

Likewise, the Reds are well-stocked in attack, so the arrival of yet another forward may not make much sense compared to, say a new centre-back or defensive midfielder.

However, Chiesa to Liverpool is a good idea simply because a player of his quality for a fee that low simply doesn’t come around very often.

Admittedly, Chiesa has had his fair share of injury issues in recent years, but the fact Liverpool are already well stocked in attack is actually good for both parties.

If Chiesa does struggle with his fitness, the Reds have more than enough cover not to have to rely on him too much.

And if he does stay fit and hit the heights he’s capable of reaching, then it could mean more crucial goals and assists that could make the difference between top four and the title.

In addition, with Liverpool set to challenge on four fronts this season, strength in depth will be absolutely crucial, and Chiesa certainly helps to provide extra depth.
