Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham have done something he’s never seen before

Tottenham Hotspur legend Jan Vertonghen has admitted that he has never seen a defensive line as high as that which Spurs deployed on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s charges took part in arguably the most dramatic Premier League game in recent history as they fell to a 4-1 loss to Chelsea.

The scoreline barely scratches the surface of the story told by the 111-minute match. Besides the goals, the other key points were the sendings-off for Spurs.

Tottenham had to play over a third of the the game with nine men after Cristian Romero was shown a red card in the first half and Destiny Udogie was sent off in the 55th minute.

Despite having two fewer players on the pitch than their opposition, Postecoglou made sure that Spurs continued to play a high line and press the opposition.

Indeed, it almost worked, with Eric Dier seeing a potential equaliser ruled out for a marginal offside and Son Heung-min also coming close.

In the end, Chelsea ended up breaking down Spurs’ resistance and added two late goals in injury-time as the hosts continued to push forward.

Vertonghen, taking to X, admitted that Tottenham were doing something he has never seen before in his whole life.

Tottenham a different proposition under Postecoglou

There haven’t been many instances where a home team loses 4-1 and gets cheered off the pitch by their own fans.

This says a lot about the amazing work Postecoglou has done with Tottenham. Even though they only had nine men on the pitch, they didn’t compromise on their principles, instead going all out for an equaliser.

There will always be the odd game where everything goes wrong and things just spiral out of control, but the Tottenham players’ mentality was something to behold.

Seeing how they did, you can’t help but feel that Spurs will go far under Postecoglou.
