Jamie Shackleton should come back into fold at Leeds due to Luke Ayling’s form

Leeds United lost their top spot in the Championship on Saturday to Norwich City, who beat them at Elland Road to jump to the summit of the table.

Marcelo Bielsa’s team were outplayed in the contest and will need a quick response ahead of some difficult looking fixtures ahead of them.

There were several Whites players that didn’t deliver anywhere near their best and defender Luke Ayling slotted into that category with a wobbling display.

Ayling didn’t fill supporters with any confidence in defensive scenarios with sloppy play, while going forward he was poor with the ball at his feet and misplaced a number of passes.

The 27-year-old’s overall form has gone off a cliff lately since coming back from an injury in December and he doesn’t deserve a regular spot in the XI as it stands.

Leeds should axe the right-back and bring in teammate Jamie Shackleton to help save the day.

Shackleton, 19, has been on the fringes of the Whites first team this season despite being promoted from the academy and has started just six of his 17 senior appearances.

He is a versatile ace that is a midfielder by trade, but Bielsa has used him at full-back several times this campaign and he’s stepped up brilliantly.

Shackleton should provide a much better defensive option than out-of-sorts Ayling, who could just do with a small rest before coming back into the team to fight for his spot.

Leeds’ teenager is an all-action player that will offer the team good amounts going forward too and it seems a no-brainer for him to be promoted to the team in the next fixture away to Middlesbrough.
