Jamie Redknapp reacts to Harry Winks display for Tottenham vs Liverpool

Jamie Redknapp has told Super Sunday on Sky Sports that Harry Winks did a great job in the Tottenham Hotspur midfield in their draw with Liverpool at the weekend.

Antonio Conte remains unbeaten in the Premier League since taking the Spurs job. And any doubts over how entertaining Tottenham are likely to be under the Italian have surely been quashed.

The 2-2 draw was absolutely incredible at times. It appeared to have absolutely everything. And in some ways, the game was all the more impressive given the number of changes both sides ended up making.

One of those involved Winks coming into the middle of the park for Spurs. The 25-year-old was making only his third Premier League start of the season.

‘He was their main man’

Winks has come in for a lot of criticism in recent years. And there has been a question mark hanging over his future at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid links with Newcastle.

But he went some way towards silencing his critics against the Reds. Winks was exceptional at times. And Redknapp picked out the sliding challenge on Naby Keita in the build-up to the first goal as the moment that epitomised his performance.

“The other big part in that goal that we haven’t mentioned really is Harry Winks’s role. There’s certain times in a game a tackle sets the tempo. He wins that ball from Keita. The way that Harry Winks goes and wins it, this is exactly what you need. It gets the crowd up, all of a sudden there’s a little bit of pace, there’s a bit of energy,” .

“If Harry Winks doesn’t win that tackle, all of a sudden, you get countered. And that was why it was so important. And today, I thought his passing, the way he intercepted the ball, Harry Winks – because he’s not really been a favourite for Nuno, for Jose – today, I thought he was their main man in there. He did a great job in so many different aspects.”

Early days, but Winks display showcases Conte effect at Tottenham

Fabrizio Romano recently suggested that he had been told that Winks was loving life at Tottenham following the appointment of Conte.

Of course, it remains early days. And actually, he probably needs to prove himself more in the games where Spurs are overwhelming favourites. He has previously shown that he can thrive on the bigger stages.

But the early signs are incredibly positive. And if Conte can get the best out of Winks, it could be a massive boost for Tottenham.
