Jamie Redknapp questions Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton substitutions vs Southampton
Everton slipped to their first defeat of 2020/21, losing 2-0 to Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Toffees were beaten by an impressive Saints side, who have now won three of their last four top-flight matches.

The goals came courtesy of James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams, with England international Danny Ings assisting both.
It was definitely an off day for Carlo Ancelotti and Everton, who couldn’t match up to Southampton’s intensity and purpose.
The Italian has gotten most things right so far this season, but in the eyes of Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, some questionable decisions were made in terms of substitutions and tactical tweaks.

He said after the game : “He made a couple of strange substitutions. We expected Iwobi to come off but he then brings Bernard on on the left-hand side – I don’t feel he ever feels comfortable there.
“It felt like, get Anthony Gordon on, a bit of pace, make something happen.
“Doucoure, taking him off and pushing Allan further forward where he looked completely out of place. It was just one of those days, not just for the players but also for the manager.”
TBR’s View – A test of Everton’s mettle
We will now find out just how capable this Everton team is.

They’ve been brilliant so far. The Southampton defeat is a setback and it will be interesting to see how they will respond.
It will also be interesting to see if Gordon gets the nod before Bernard next time, with the Brazilian indeed struggling to make an impact for the second half.
