Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool fans may react badly to ‘difficult’ Trent Alexander-Arnold situation

Although Arne Slot’s new era at Liverpool has begun incredibly well, it’s often hard to forget the increasingly worrying sub-plot at Anfield this season.

Arguably Liverpool’s three most important players: Trent Alexander Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, are all out of contract after the current campaign.

The trio have all started the new season incredibly well, three players who are still crucial right now, and will be for years to come if they decide to stay.

Fortunately Liverpool are confident of keeping Alexander-Arnold, who has been biding his time to assess life under Slot.

But until Liverpool announce that the England defender is staying put long-term, there will still be a lot of unease.

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool fans will react badly if Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves

Speaking on the ‘’ podcast, Jamie Carragher has now been discussing Alexander-Arnold’s situation in particular, explaining why it’s so different to Van Dijk’s and Salah’s.

Carragher recalled the names of Steve McManaman and Steven Gerrard in his explanation, two other exceptional English talents who thrived at Anfield.

He said: “I think his situation at Liverpool is really interesting. I’ve been thinking about this the last couple of weeks, in that you’ve got three players, and I don’t know if this was the same at United, but I always feel when you’re at Liverpool and you’re a local player, not that you want to leave the club, but leaving the club is difficult.

“So you’ve got three players in Van Dijk, Salah and Trent, and I think the reaction of Liverpool supporters, if say the three of them went in the summer for free, or one of, say Salah goes, I think most Liverpool fans will go ‘you’re legend, we got you for £40m, well look what you’ve done, you’re amazing, and go and enjoy whatever’.

“I think it would be the same with Van Dijk, but with Trent it will be different, they won’t.”

Ian Wright interjected: “There’s a Steven Gerrard vibe.”

Carragher: “Yeah, and if you go through it, it happened to [Steve] McManaman when he went to Madrid, there was no like, oh good luck, you’re going to the biggest club in the world.

“It was a bit like, who do you think you are going there? Going there for free. Stevie when he [nearly] went to Chelsea.”

Liverpool could have three more contract issues next summer

Looking ahead to contracts that expire in the summer of 2026, Liverpool could be at risk of losing three more important first-team players ().

All of Ibrahima Konate, Andrew Robertson and Caoimhin Kelleher have expiring deals, players Slot will not want to lose.

That being said, Kelleher is still itching to leave Liverpool according to reports, not satisfied with his role as number two.

And in fairness, it’s unlikely that any keeper in world football could take Alisson’s starting spot at Anfield, at least for the next five years.

And with Giorgi Mamardashvili also on board for the future, the writing really is on the wall for Kelleher, who won’t want to waste any more time.
