Jamie Carragher says whether Leif Davis deserved a red card after stamping on Bukayo Saka in Ipswich v Arsenal

As Arsenal expectedly cruised past Ipswich Town by winning 4-0 on Sunday, the biggest headline from the contest was Leif Davis being handed a red card during the contest.

Davis decided to stamp on Bukayo Saka’s heel and soon after, he was sent off 32 minutes into the clash.

Whether the Ipswich Town left-back deserved to be sent off is likely to stir opinion amongst the masses.

Jamie Carragher has now chimed in on whether Leif Davis’ challenged really merited a straight red card as he made no attempt to win the ball off Saka.

Jamie Carragher says Leif David deserved a red card during Ipswich Town vs Arsenal

On , Carragher initially felt that Davis’ foul on Bukayo Saka seemed like one that could be deemed worthy of a yellow or an orange card as Ipswich eventually lost to Arsenal.

However, after seeing a few replays, Jamie Carragher admitted that the referee made the right decision by sending Davis off — describing his challenge on Saka as “ridiculous” while commenting on Arsenal’s latest win against Ipswich.

“We’ve looked at it a few times. At first, it looked the in between a yellow and a card. An orange one. But the more you look at it, it’s ridiculous.”

Matthew Upson felt Davis’ tackle on Saka was dangerous, as he said via : “When the player raises his hand like that when he hits the ground, you feel like it is really bad. Because Bukayo Saka’s ankle was at a slight angle when the stamp came in and it’s never nice to have that, when your foot is planted in a vulnerable position.”

“And he was in a vulnerable position when that stamp and force cam down on him. And I think that it was a deciding factor for the referee and VAR when they looked at it.”

“It could have done something worse, but it looks like he is okay.”

Why Chris Kavanagh decided to send Ipswich star Leif Davis off vs Arsenal

But Premier League Match Centre have explained the rationale behind Davis’ sending off after Jamie Carragher and Matthew Upson agree on the decision that went Arsenal’s way against Ipswich.

“The referee’s call of red card to Davis for serious foul play was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed to be endangering the safety of an opponent.”

Arsenal fans will be hoping that Saka has not suffered a serious injury and is fit to start against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final in over a week’s time.

But on the challenge itself, it is tough to disagree that it was a definite red card.
