Jamie Carragher says Ruben Amorim has scored an ‘open goal’ at Man United by making simple decision which is ‘brilliant’
In total, Ruben Amorim has now overseen seven games as Manchester United boss, earning four wins, two losses and one draw.
Of course, Man United’s brilliant late show against their rivals Manchester City was the pick of the bunch by a long mile, three points Amorim partly owes to the talent of Amad Diallo.
Ole Gunnar Solksjaer was right about Diallo, and now Amorim will be determined to realise all of the winger’s potential at Old Trafford.
That being said, Amorim partly made way for Diallo against City by dropping both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who famously weren’t in the squad at all.
Ruben Amorim made the right call to drop Marcus Rashford against Man City
Speaking on the ‘The Overlap Fan Debate’, Jamie Carragher has now shared his thoughts on Amorim’s decision to drop Rashford in particular.
Carragher explained why he thought Amorim’s timing was ‘brilliant’, admitting that he’s not even sure if United are worse without the England winger.

Carragher said: “Do you know what? I was watching the game and Ruben Amorim had made the decision and managers always make this decision.
“Every manager, especially at a big club, comes in and makes the decision early on and everyone goes he has shown the dressing room.
“I actually think it was the biggest open goal for the manager to make himself look strong. Is Rashford that good that you are going to lose that much by him not playing?
“It’s not like you are losing your top man and it’s going to affect your team. I’m not sure he is in the best team actually.
“So I think it was brilliant for the manager to do it, Rashford is always a huge talking point, but I don’t think it took anything away from the team.
“I think we talk about Rashford too much. I don’t think he’s that good a player for the amount of time that we spent talking about him and the attention that he gets.”
Jamie Carragher struggles to see how Marcus Rashford fits under Ruben Amorim
Carragher then added to those comments saying he didn’t necessarily think Rashford was suited to Amorim’s football anyway.
He continued: “I also think the set up of the manager, there isn’t really a winger in that system.
“I don’t think Rashford suits having his back to goal and I think a lot of the time he has played centre-forward, I think Hojlund is better than him in that position.
“Those two number 10 positions I don’t see him and he’s not going to play wing back.
“I think the whole set up of the manager doesn’t suit him and it’s best for all parties that he does move on.”
It really could prove to be an excellent move by Amorim, who has demonstrated his leadership as well as potentially putting the wheels in motion to solve a difficult situation that Erik ten Hag never truly got to grips with.
Rashford has looked uncomfortable at United for some time now, even if he wasn’t itching to leave the club in the past.
Rashford doesn’t want to go to Saudi Arabia next month, but it’s looking more and more likely that his time at Old Trafford could be coming to an end.
