Jamie Carragher says he was told Arsenal were offered the chance to sign £60m striker recently

Andrea Berta and his recruitment team are thought to be scouring the market to find Arsenal’s next number nine this summer.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad has been crying out for a new striker for some time now — Kai Havertz has been excellent at times but the Gunners need an alternative.

In truth, Arsenal would probably benefit from a more traditional number nine to come in alongside Havertz, who is also able to play in midfield when needed.

Arteta hasn’t had a 20-goal-a-season striker for some time now and perhaps that is what is ultimately stopping Arsenal from winning the Premier League.

Following their draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening, Arsenal have now drawn 13 times in the league this season, games which might be won by a prolific striker.

Jamie Carragher says Ollie Watkins was actually offered to Arsenal

That being said, Arsenal seemingly did make some attempts to remedy their situation in January.

Arsenal made a bid for Ollie Watkins at Aston Villa, striker who many believed that Unai Emery would be loath to lose.

However, when speaking on the ‘Stick To Football’ podcast, pundit Jamie Carragher actually just claimed that Villa were the ones offering Watkins to Arsenal.

Carragher shared his ‘information’ to the panel, news that seemed to surprise the likes of Gary Neville and Ian Wright.

Sharing his insider information, Carragher said: “When we talk about Arsenal going for him, someone told me, I think Villa offered them to Arsenal as well. Well, I think I know that, actually.”

Neville replied: “What, and Arsenal said no to him?”

Carragher: “No, Villa offered him.”

Neville: “Offered what, sorry?”

Carragher: “Watkins.”

Neville: “Watkins to Arsenal? I thought Arsenal wanted him then?”

Carragher: “No, what I’m saying is, before [Jhon] Duran went, exactly, they were like, oh, probably got an offer for Duran, so I don’t think it was Arsenal phoning and Villa saying, we want to sign him.”

Neville: “Why would Arsenal not sign him then?”

Carragher: “Because they didn’t offer enough money, whatever they offered, whatever it was, £50m, £60m.

“But the information I had was that — what I’m saying is, he might know that. If I know that, I’m sure his agent knows that.”

Wright added: “Do you think that’s why he’s vexed?”

Arsenal should reconisder their Ollie Watkins interest

Of course, with Berta looking for a ‘win now’ striker for Arsenal this summer, reigniting the club’s interest in Watkins might not actually be the worst move.

Arsenal are interested in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, a brilliant striker himself.

But signing Watkins would bring a certain guarantee of goals to Arsenal, a striker who can stretch a defence like no other option that Arteta currently has.

As Wright referred to at the end of Carragher’s comments, Watkins admitted that he was ‘fuming’ after being benched by Marcus Rashford in some huge games at Villa recently.

And perhaps it is now the opportune time to sign a 29-year-old who could elevate Arsenal to the next level.
