Jamie Carragher says he knew £16m player would flop at Liverpool before he even signed
Liverpool have signed their fair share of transfer flops over the years.
The likes of Andy Carroll, Naby Keita and Alberto Aquilani didn’t make the impact they wanted to at Anfield.
Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing some of the best and worst Premier League signings of all-time, and one fan he was speaking to mentioned Mario Balotelli at Liverpool.
Carragher says that he knew Balotelli wouldn’t make it at Liverpool before he’d even arrived, claiming that he always knew this was one that was going to fail.
Jamie Carragher knew Mario Balotelli would fail at Liverpool
Carragher spoke about the signing of Balotelli.
“I’d forgotten about Balotelli. That was one of those signings. I think I’d just left, but you almost knew it was going to fail before it even happened, you were like ‘oh no.’” Carragher said.
Mario Balotelli joined Liverpool at the wrong time
This was a disastrous signing, but, in another world, Balotelli could’ve been brilliant for Liverpool.
Unfortunately, Balotelli joined the Reds just as everything was going wrong under Brendan Rodgers.
Luis Suarez had departed, spirits were low after a failed title tilt, and Rodgers was feeling the pressure.
Other talented strikers such as Iago Aspas failed in the same circumstances.
The reality is that Balotelli’s track record before and since was excellent.
The year before he’d joined Liverpool, Balotelli hit 14 Serie A goals for AC Milan, while within two years of departing, he was hitting 18 Ligue 1 goals for Nice.
This was just a case of bad timing, and who knows? Perhaps if Jurgen Klopp had been able to get his hands on Balotelli things would’ve worked out differently on Merseyside.
Balotelli will go down as a serious flop for Liverpool, but the Italian was a very talented player who could’ve been a star at Anfield under different circumstances.
It’s a real shame things didn’t work out with this transfer.
