‘Lucky’: Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool man should have seen red against City today

Liverpool and Manchester City put in a thrilling clinic of the very best of English football as they battled out a 2-2 draw at The Etihad today.

City had looked like the team who’d go on to take all three points after being in front at the break. But Liverpool came roaring out of the blocks and Sadio Mane equalised early in the second 45. From there, despite numerous chances for both teams, neither side could find that elusive third goal.

The game was, as usual, full of quality and big moments. However, one big moment from the Liverpool side of things came in the 82nd minute as Fabinho scythed down Bernardo Silva. It was a reckless looking challenge, and according to , the Liverpool man could have been sent off.

“It’s the type of tackles that any higher and it’s going to be a red card. Sometimes you get away with it because it’s on the ankle, whether that’s right or not,” Carragher said on Sky co-comms.

“Sadio Mane loses it and then Fabinho makes the challenge. He knows what he’s doing and he might be lucky that it’s only a yellow card.”

Fabinho’s challenge was one of a number of late cynical tackles from the Reds. Virgil van Dijk also chopped down Kevin De Bruyne late on.

TBR’s View: Fabinho Just About On The Right Side Of The Law

Carragher was right in pointing this tackle from Fabinho out and there are probably some refs who might have looked at it again and changed their mind. However, the Brazilian was just about low enough to get away with things.

Fabinho had a good game in the middle of the park and he knew what he was doing with this challenge. But he’ll need to make sure he times them better in the future, or else risk a big sending off in crucial games.
