Jamie Carragher says £41m Liverpool man should have been sent off v Brentford

Liverpool managed to see off Brentford today in Arne Slot’s first game at Anfield but it wasn’t without controversy.

Slot saw his team produce some excellent football at times and there were definitely signs of what the new manager wants to implement.

Of course, the transition from Jurgen Klopp was never going to completely straight forward.

But some things do remain the same and one constant it looks like we’ll see in Slot’s Liverpool team is the front three of Jota, Salah, and Diaz.

The trio were all involved in the opening goal today as Diaz scored from Jota’s pass.

However, early in the second half, it was a challenge from Jota that caught the eye, not a goal.

The Portuguese striker seemed to hammer into Brentford’s Nathan Collins with an arm that decked the defender. Jota walked away from the challenge without a card.

But watching the challenge close up and on replays, Jamie Carragher has said he believes Jota could have seen red.

Speaking on Sky Sports co-commentary about the incident, Carragher believes that Jota was indeed lucky to stay on the pitch.

“He definitely puts his arm up, he puts it up towards his face.  He’s a lucky boy, Jota,” Carragher said.

Jota goes on another day

Jota was a threat all day long for the Reds but there was definitely something in this challenge that didn’t sit right.

As Carragher commented, there was definitely a motion with the arm from Jota which seemed to indicate he had Collins in his sights.

On another day and with another referee, this is very much one that could be punished and it’s surprising Jota has not seen a card here.

Over the season, we’re bound to see something similar to this result in a red card and once again, we’ll be having conversations about inconsistencies.
