Jamie Carragher reacts to Wolves penalty shout against Liverpool

Jamie Carragher that he could not believe that Wolves were not awarded a second minute penalty against Liverpool on Monday.

The Reds picked up an important victory at Molineux. And it was Diogo Jota who scored the decisive goal for the champions during the first-half.

But perhaps, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men will feel that they should have been given the chance to break the deadlock from the penalty spot before Jota’s strike.

Nelson Semedo was brought down by Alisson as the Reds goalkeeper looked to reclaim the ball after fumbling a cross from Adama Traore.

It did not appear that Semedo would have been able to get to the ball. And the referee decided that the Liverpool goalkeeper had not committed a foul. VAR decided that the official had not made an error either.

But at half-time, Carragher admitted that Jurgen Klopp’s men were lucky to get away with it.

He suggested that the criticism coming Michael Oliver’s way for awarding Alexandre Lacazette a contentious spot-kick in the North London derby may have influenced Craig Pawson.

“Yes, it was a penalty,” . “And I was thinking about yesterday, the reaction to Michael Oliver, he gives something, and I don’t know whether that goes into the referee’s head where, if he’s going to give a penalty, certainly after two minutes, it’s almost got to be 100% a penalty. But for me, it’s a penalty and Liverpool have got away with one.

“I can’t believe it’s not been given as a penalty,” he added.

TBR View: Alisson may feel relieved after clumsy challenge

You can understand why the referee was not convinced that it was a penalty. It appears that Alisson’s momentum takes him into Semedo. And it is not entirely clear whether the Wolves man would get onto the ball as Ozan Kabak makes a clearance.

But it is a clumsy moment from the goalkeeper. And he may well feel incredibly relieved that the referee did not decide to point to the spot.
