Jamie Carragher reacts after Gary Neville is suggested to be the next Manchester United manager

Manchester United have had more than their share of criticism from Jamie Carragher over the years and the former Liverpool man has now been bowled over by a suggestion that good pal Gary Neville become the next manager.

Carragher and Neville have spent the last decade going back and forth about Liverpool and United’s fortunes with Carragher having the upper-hand in the main due to United’s struggles.

Right now, Ruben Amorim is struggling to get things going at Old Trafford, as he becomes the latest in a long line of managers to struggle.

Amorim will, of course, get time under INEOS. But if results don’t pick up, then the pressure cooker of United will build regardless and discussions over potential replacements will no doubt begin.

However, in one of the more obscure suggestions in recent times, Des Lynam has claimed that Gary Neville is the man to lead United back to glory.

Jamie Carragher’s reaction as Gary Neville suggested for Man United job

Writing for the , Lynam has doubled down on his previous stance that Neville be considered for the United manager job.

“A few years ago I suggested that the only man who could steer United back to their former glory was their one-time captain Gary Neville. I put it to him and while I touched something of a nerve, Gary made it clear that his business interests and his punditry for Sky would take precedence over any thought of engaging in football management again,” Lynam writes.

“But here goes – Neville would still be the best man for the job. He has Manchester United blood running through his veins. He is deeply hurt by the club’s present predicament. He has a powerful personality and would be a strong presence in the dressing room.

As expected, Carragher couldn’t wait to get his reply in to the comments and it’s safe to say that Carragher finds the suggestion pretty amusing.

Gary Neville’s record at Valencia shows he’s not the man for Man United

Gary Neville is one of the good guys when it comes to his love for Man United and there’s no question he could have some use being involved with the club.

However, his passion and will for them to do well might end up being to his detriment.

Furthermore, his record as manager at Valencia is hardly inspiring, with Neville often ribbed by Carragher for his achievements in Spain.

Gary Neville at Valencia Result
Win percentage (%)35.17
Highest win 6-0 v Rapid Vienna
Biggest defeat 7-0 v Barcelona

Neville won just 10 of his 28 games in charge of Valencia, losing 11 and drawing the other seven however the manner of his departure and the 7-0 hammering at Barcelona live long in the memory.

For now, it looks like Neville won’t be the man United need and until things really implode, then Ruben Amorim is the man for now.
