Jamie Carragher now says Man United paid way over the odds to sign ‘magnificent’ player

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United ‘panicked’ and overpaid to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid in 2022.

The former Liverpool defender has been discussing Man United’s approach in the transfer market and Casemiro’s future.

Casemiro has managed just 12 appearances for United this term after he was a key man last time out.

The Brazilian midfielder signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2022 for a fee worth around .

It came after United missed out on a move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, a player who previously played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

Despite the hefty fee, Casemiro proved to be a brilliant option for Ten Hag last season and was crucial to a successful debut campaign for the Dutchman.

But the 31-year-old has been of late after missing the last 12 league games through injury.

And Jamie Carragher believes United paid way over the odds to sign Casemiro.

Carragher says United overpaid for Casemiro

Speaking on , Carragher claimed that United ‘panicked’ after missing out on De Jong and overpaid to sign Casemiro.

“Liverpool have basically competed with United and Man City over the last seven or eight years with Klopp, despite having less money, and I think a big thing they have done is that if they haven’t got the man they wanted they have not panicked and gone and got someone else,” he said.

“I think that is what Man United did with Casemiro. They wanted De Jong all summer and at the last minute, let’s overpay for someone.

“You’re now in the position where you are trying to sell him to maybe a club in Saudi Arabia.”

Many were surprised by the fee United paid to land Casemiro in 2022 considering he was 30 years of age at the time.

It was always going to be a risky move to pay a huge fee for a player who was approaching the latter stages of his career.

Their gamble seemed to pay off last season as Casemiro enjoyed such a ‘bright ‘‘ start to life at Old Trafford.

But his form has dropped off significantly in recent months and his injury has led to the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo.
