Jamie Carragher hails ‘back-up’ Liverpool player’s efforts v West Ham

Liverpool ran out 5-1 winners over West Ham United to cruise into the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.

The Reds didn’t find it quite as easy as the scoreline suggests, but they ultimately made the most of the Hammers’ capitulation at Anfield.

Jarell Quansah’s own goal saw West Ham take the lead on 21 minutes, but Diogo Jota struck the equaliser for Liverpool just five minutes later.

Jota added a second for the Reds in the 49th minute, after which the Hammers threatened to get back into the game.

However, their fight-back was ended by Mohamed Salah, who came off the bench on the hour and found the back of the net on 74 minute.

Cody Gakpo then added gloss to the scoreline with a late brace which impressed Sky Sports pundit and Anfield legend Jamie Carragher.

Jamie Carragher hails ‘brilliant’ Liverpool ace Cody Gakpo

“This is Liverpool’s back-up left-winger,” he said on Sky Sports, as transcribed by , after Gakpo’s first of the night.

“It just shows you the quality they have in reserve at this moment.

“The pace of the shot beats the goalkeeper at the near post, he gets a slight touch on it.”

Carragher then praised the Dutchman after his second, : “Gakpo again showing his class.

“Brilliant turn, left two players for dead and then you know when he’s on that left side and he cuts in on that right foot, he’s going to let fly.

“There’s a deflection, takes it away from the goalkeeper. Really good from Gakpo, brilliant.”

How did the media rate Gakpo’s display?

“Caused West Ham issues in the first half cutting inside and had one effort deflected narrowly wide,” wrote , who gave him an 8 out of 10 rating.

“Not as involved in the second half but still carried a threat and had a powerful late effort saved.

“Then burst into life as he picked out the bottom corner in the 90th minute before showing great strength to shrug off a defender and bag his second, albeit with the help of a deflection.”

Likewise, gave Gakpo an 8 out of 10 and wrote:” Gakpo was the star of the show against AC Milan last week.

“Despite being back on the bench against Bournemouth, once again showed his class against West Ham.

“The Dutch international looked lively throughout the game and grabbed himself a second-half brace.”
