Jamie Carragher comments on Philippe Coutinho’s form after leaving Liverpool
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised his old club for the way they reinvested the money from the sale of Philippe Coutinho.
In the , Carragher also noted that Coutinho is playing worse now he’s not operating under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Carragher : “When Tottenham fans lamented the different direction of their club last weekend, here is what happened; Liverpool sold their best player two months after losing 4-1 to Spurs in 2017, reinvesting to make their side better.
“Had Barcelona bid £150 million for Harry Kane in January 2018, would Spurs have accepted to sign Van Dijk and Alisson?
“The form of Coutinho, or even Emre Can, since they stopped working under Klopp underlines the manager’s influence. Coutinho looked like one of the world’s best at Anfield. Less so since he left.”

TBR’s View – Coutinho’s exit stung but made Liverpool more of a team
Klopp liked Coutinho as a player and got him playing well, but selling the Brazilian helped create a far more balanced Liverpool side.
As Carragher points out, it also allowed Klopp to sign Alisson and Virgil van Dijk to beef up his backline.
That took Liverpool from a top-heavy team overloaded on attackers, without enough space to really squeeze them all in when they were all fit, to a structured, balanced, secure side capable of winning trophies.
