Jamie Barjonas trying to emulate Steven Davis, Jermain Defoe and Ryan Jack after signing Rangers contract

Rangers youngster Jamie Barjonas is benefitting from training with some experienced first-team players, .

Steven Gerrard has promoted Barjonas to the first-team this season, although he is yet to feature. He has nine previous Rangers appearances under his belt but has never played under Gerrard.

Nonetheless, Rangers rewarded the 20-year-old with a new one-year contract extension, taking him through to summer 2021. After loan spells with Bury and Raith Rovers last season, Barjonas is aiming for a first-team breakthrough soon.

After signing his new contract, Barjonas explained that training with Rangers’ experienced professionals is helping him to get better. He picked out Steven Davis, Jermain Defoe and Ryan Jack as three standout examples.

: “Training with the likes of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack and the likes of Jermain Defoe, who are real senior pros, I think that is really helping me in my development personally.

“You want to be playing football but being able to train with this team and learn under the likes of Steven Gerrard and Mick Beale, has really helped me with my development this season.”

TBR’s view

Barjonas will only benefit from this sort of exposure. Last season, he struggled on loan at Bury and should have perhaps been playing at a higher level than Raith in the second half of the campaign.

The Scotland youth international is clearly a talented individual and Gerrard rates him highly. After a string of strong displays in the reserves, he will be hoping for a first-team chance before long.
