James Tarkowski shares the two words Seamus Coleman text him just days before he joined Everton

James Tarkowski says Everton captain Seamus Coleman has encouraged him to be himself since moving to Goodison Park.

Frank Lampard went out and got himself two durable central defenders during the summer, who are both leaders.

Conor Coady was captain of Wolves before he came in and Tarkowski was a huge voice and presence for Burnley.

But that did not put Coleman’s nose out of joint and he has apparently told Tarkowski to be the player he was at Turf Moor.

Tarkowski on Coleman

Tarkowski told the : “Seamus Coleman text me a few days before I joined saying ‘be yourself.

“That was quite important for me to know that the captain was there saying just be the person you are.

“I wanted to be vocal and wanted people to know I was there to lead straight away, but you do have to be careful.

“I didn’t want to go in too hard too soon and people start to question you a little bit.”

Tarkowski and Coady have made a huge difference to the Everton backline and offered them the foundation to go and build something under Lampard.

For too long, Everton have had a rotating cast of injury-hit defenders, which makes it very hard to get stability at the back.

That has changed now, and even as Coleman’s prime years dwindle, he is still an enormous presence at Everton, welcoming players and making them feel at home.
